6th Annual Empowering Seniors 2014

6th Annual Empowering Seniors 2014

August is here, and we are swiftly moving through the year and preparing for our 6th Annual Empowering Seniors 2014 – Friday, October 3 at FBCE Campus West. Sponsors, screenings, vendors, volunteers, participants, workshop speakers, entertainment performers, and staff have created an award-winning seniors and caregivers’ event for Northeast Tarrant County.

An addition to the event will be 10 food booths which will feature a variety of food for tasting and snacking throughout the day from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM. So come ready to taste. I am thrilled at the continued popularity of our event and enjoy the feedback from participants about their experience and knowledge gained at the expo. For more information about the event, please call 817-581-3600.

Wednesday, August 6 is the Tarrant County Back to School Roundup, which assists underserved students in grades Pre-K through 12 who reside in TarrantCounty. Over 10,000 students will be provided free school supplies, dental and vision screenings, immunizations, haircuts, and information on education, health and social services. It is amazing to see these young students and their families get so excited about this opportunity to receive information, get their back packs, school supplies, haircuts, and goodies for school which so many of us take for granted.

Your new Northeast Courthouse on Grapevine Highway in Hurst (same location) is nearing completion. We are a few months away from completion and re-opening our doors to serve Tarrant County residents! With an expanded building and parking lot, you will love your new courthouse. It has been an ideal summer for construction with no major setbacks and no record-setting high temperature days yet.

Remember Texas’ Tax Free Weekend – August 8 – 10, 2014. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 are exempt from sales and use taxes.

September 18 is North Texas Giving Day. It is an online giving event thatprovides the opportunity for people in North Texas to come together to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits. Contact your favorite nonprofit in the area for participation information.

Plan to join us for Coffee with the Commissioner at Southlake Town Hall on Friday, August 8 7:30 – 9:00 AM. You will be able to visit with my staff and me regarding any issues.

As always, we are here to serve you.
