Perry’s House of Cards
Austin, TX – Today, Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry’s gaggle of lawyers filed a brief challenging the Governor’s indictment. Perry’s lawyers claimed the charges are unconstitutional and asked the courts to throw them out. [Texas Tribune, 8/25/2014]
This news comes the day after it was reported that in June 2013, Perry reached out to a well-known Austin attorney to replace the Travis County District Attorney days before Perry publicly announced his threat to veto funding for the District Attorney’s office. Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Will Hailer released the following statement:
“Perry’s lawyers continue to feign outrage at the Republican governor’s indictment, but his actions show that his involvement in this situation goes way deeper than Perry would like to admit. His backroom deals and underhanded tactics are better suited for a House of Cards episode than the Texas Governor’s mansion.
“This is not about Perry’s veto. It is about coercion and abuse of power. We are confident that the courts will uphold this indictment, and when Governor Perry has his day in court, his pervasive culture of corruption will be exposed.”
