Former Central High School standout softball player and a current Arkansas Tech softball player Siarra Gomez has been selected to play for the USA team in Italy this summer.
The Italian Softball partnerships have selected USA Athletes International as the sponsoring organization to represent the United States in the 2014 Tuscany Tournament in Grosseto, Italy. This tournament is scheduled for July 21-30.
USA Athletes International is working diligently with softball coaches across America to gather recommendations and identifying quality individuals to represent the USA as both player and ambassador on this 14-player roster. Gomez has been invited because she was one of the recommended players for the team.
“This is not a tryout situation, but an official invitation to be part of the team,” said William A. Edington, Executive Director, in a letter to Gomez.
Although invited to be a part of this exclusive opportunity, team members are responsible for raising or paying $4,093 to cover their share of the team’s expenses as set forth by the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA with respect to the Foreign Tours guidelines. In an effort to raise money for her trip, Gomez will be selling tamales for $10 per dozen and pursue other fundraising activities. Siarra’s grandparents and family will be making the homemade tamales
