KHS Freshman Diver Headed for World Jr. Diving Championships
Keller High School freshman diver Emily Grund will represent her school, club, community and country at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships to be held September 9-14 in Russia.
Grund won the gold medal in the 14-15 age group of the 3-meter springboard competition at the 2014 Junior National Championships in August to earn a spot in the international competition. The biennial competition brings together young prospects from 35 nations with the strongest diving programs. Grund will compete on the 3-meter springboard as well as the 3-meter springboard synchro event.
This year’s World Championships are not Grund’s first foray into international competition. In 2013, she won the gold medal on the 3-meter springboard at the Jr. Pan American Diving Championships in Tucson, Ariz., finishing first in the 12-13 age group. She also participated in the 11-and-under division of the 2011 Jr. Pan American Championships which were held in Medellín, Columbia
Grund is a member of USA Diving’s Future Olympic Force, a program designed for talented junior divers who aspire to become members of the Olympic Performance Squad and compete at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. She currently trains 28 hours each week – before and after school and on Saturdays – at the Keller ISD Natatorium with the GC Diving Club. Grund is looking forward to competing for Keller High this winter with the goal of making it to the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships.
