Northwest ISD Elementary Students Receive Free Fresh Produce
Northwest ISD, in partnership with ARAMARK Food Services, is now offering every elementary student a choice of free fresh fruits and vegetables at lunch. Any NISD elementary student, whether they dine in the cafeteria or not, can experience this wonderful program.
Four years ago NISD and ARAMARK piloted the first free fruit and vegetable cart in the state of Texas. Two years ago, the district emphasized fresh fruits and vegetables to raise awareness of healthy eating and to give students a chance to try something they might not have the exposure to at home. The different items featured on the cart are apples, oranges, kiwi, watermelon, green beans, carrots and tomatoes. ARAMRK likes to emphasize the seasonality of the produce and purchasing as much local product as possible.
NISD has a video series called “What’s the Buzz?” where the community can view exciting things happening throughout the district. This month’s video focuses on this program.
