Texas GOP Chair Approves Neglecting Texans
Today, the Texas Tribune hosted TribLive: A Conversation With Party Chairs between Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa and the Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas Steve Munisteri.
During the conversation, moderator Evan Smith asked Munisteri “[with a Republican majority in the Senate] how do you govern a state of all Texans, as opposed to simply governing for Republicans?” Steve Munisteri replied with “its not the Republican Party’s job to protect Democratic constituents.” [Texas Tribune, 9/10/2014, 52:00]
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Suggesting that Republican elected officials should only represent their primary voters when it comes to passing legislation is disrespectful to all Texans. As a member of the Texas Legislature, elected officials take an oath of office committing to do what is best for their state and their constituents, not pledging loyalty to their political party.
“This statement illustrates what Democrats have know for a long time, Texas Republicans are working for their own best interests and ignoring what is best for the people of Texas. Texans deserve leaders who will put them and what is right first.”
