Vaqueros officially sign three players from open tryouts initiative
The Vaqueros announced the signing of three new players today after the trio was identified through the minor league soccer club’s open tryouts process.
Fidel Santamaria, 20, and a pair of brothers Hasanein, 21, and Mohamad Srour, 19, were officially added to the club this week. The trio will be available for the Vaqueros international match against the El Salvador under-21 national team on Oct. 18 at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie.
Coach Mark Snell culled through over 200 potential players during the open tryouts in August and September. Snell invited several players from the tryouts to train with the Vaqueros first team and more additions could be made from the current crop of trialists.
Santamaria, formerly of FC Denton and coached by Carlos Olate, made the trip to tryouts with a group of five players from the Northern Texas city.
“Our staff immediately saw Fidel as a central defender due to his instincts and athleticism,” Snell said “He is adapting well to our style of play and we feel he is going to be a great addition to our squad.”
The brothers from North Crowley high school were born in Syria to Afghan parents but have found a home locally.
Hasanein fits the classic speedy winger role while Mohamad brings a central midfielder’s skill set.
“When we first saw these two brothers they stood out right away with their high level of technical ability,” Snell said. “Both bring a lot of creativity to the team. They both have different personalities on the field and are fitting in nicely with the core group.”
