Vaqueros launch “Kicking & Reading” program presented by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers

The students at AV Cato Elementary enjoyed a special appearance on Monday as the Fort Worth Vaqueros launched the “Kicking & Reading” program presented by new Vaqueros supporter Raising Cane’s.

Vaqueros coach Mark Snell and a pair of players, Hasanein and Mohamad Srour, spent Monday morning reading to more than 100 children and then joining them on the playground for some soccer.

“I want to thank AV Cato for having us,” Snell said. “This was our first ever ‘Kicking & Reading’ program and we had a great time. The students were awesome.”

The Vaqueros’ Kicks for Kids program funds the “Kicking & Reading” program by giving a free ticket to the 2015 home opener for every student who meets the reading requirements during the 2014-2015 school year.

The “Kicking & Reading” program will continue at elementary and middle schools across Fort Worth and students will receive a special bookmark from Raising Cane’s to promote continued reading throughout the school year. For each book a student reads, they will receive a stamp on their bookmark and then after 7 books will receive a free kids meal good at any Fort Worth Raising Cane’s restaurant.

The Srour brothers received their education locally as both graduated from North Crowley high school on the southern edge of Fort Worth.

“It feels really good to give back to the community and talk to the kids and share our experience,” Mohamad Srour said. “It’s a very humbling experience and was really fun.”

AV Cato librarian Allison Fitzgerald coordinated the first event in conjunction with the Vaqueros staff.

“The students and faculty were able to interact with the community yesterday when the Fort Worth Vaqueros visited AV Cato Elementary,” she said. “The players and coach answered questions, signed autographs and even played a short game of soccer with them. It was a fabulous experience for all of us.”

Raising Cane’s marketing manager Courtney Colvin added, “At Raising Cane’s we believe education is a major foundation for communities and students achieving their potential in life. We know the importance of supporting educational programs in the community in which we serve and we are thrilled to be partnering with the Fort Worth Vaqueros and the ‘Kicking & Reading’ program this year!”
