Many formidable women made Texas what it is today. Beneath sunbonnets, Stetsons or couture, ladies of the Lone Star State carved out ranches when men were unable. Over the years, these women defended the homestead, rescued hostages, nurtured livestock and built communities. Author Carmen Goldthwaite’s Texas Ranch Women – Three Centuries of Mettle and Moxie is an inspiring survey of fierce Lone Star females.
