FINDING KIND SCREENING TO BE HELD AT WESTLAKE ACADEMY

FINDING KIND SCREENING TO BE HELD AT WESTLAKE ACADEMY

Nearly 1 in 3 students admit to being bullied, is afraid to talk about it, and lists it as a concern regarding personal safety. To spread awareness and start a dialogue about the issue, a special screening of Finding Kind will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Westlake Academy, 2600 J.T. Ottinger Road. This special showing is for moms (or female role models) and girls ages middle school and up who either reside in Westlake or attend Westlake Academy.
Finding Kind is filmed by friends and first-time filmmakers Lauren Parsekian and Molly Stroud, who were themselves victims of “mean girls.” Their suffering led them on a cross-country road trip to document on film the cruelty of girl bullying. During their 10,000 mile journey, they talked to more than 30,000 girls, visited more than 60 cities, and set-up “Truth Booths” capturing tearful and poignant memories and confessions from girls across the nation.
The film has been covered by Dr. Phil, CBS News, and Variety. It recently was named Best Documentary at the Palm Beach Women’s International Film Festival and was a finalist for the Social Justice Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
Memories of her own moments enduring childhood bullying prompted IndieFlix CEO Scilla Andreen to take Parsekian and Stroud under her wing and pull out all the stops to distribute and launch their new film on girl bullying. “When I first watched Finding Kind, it reminded me of all of the mean girls I’ve encountered,” Andreen said. “This film is a change agent. It will transform the way we treat each other and demonstrate the power of film.”
Andreen said small films like Finding Kind often struggle for years showing at film festivals before being picked up and distributed, less than handful ever see a theatrical release and few make money. “I needed to turn this model upside down in order to get this powerful film out to young women around the world.”
