Bond Update: Construction Beginning Soon

Bond Update: Construction Beginning Soon

Early April marks five months since Keller ISD voters approved the 2014 Bond Package, and since that time the District has negotiated contracts with three architectural firms and two construction management firms, finalized some of the major design plans, and the first phases of construction are scheduled to begin in May.

The District has broken the major Bond projects into three different project packages:
• Package 1: Career and Technical Education Campus and Renovations at Indian Springs Middle School
• Package 2: Keller High School Additions and Renovations and Improvements to Bear Creek
Intermediate School
• Package 3: Building Additions to Parkwood Hill Intermediate and Hillwood Middle School, as well as the New Elementary School campus and the District’s 2nd Early Learning Center facility.

Keller ISD has advertised, selected, and negotiated contracts with three different architectural firms to design each of these packages, and has advertised, selected, and negotiated contracts with two different construction management firms to build the projects.

Corgan Architects is the design team for the Career and Technical Education Campus and the Indian Springs Middle School Renovation projects, and architects have been meeting with District staff and community partners to identify the District’s instructional program needs and industry-leading initiatives. The complete re-design of the two projects has been presented to and approved by the Keller ISD Board of Trustees. Facility plans have also been presented to and approved by the City of Keller Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
The contractor has been working with the campus administration at South Keller Intermediate to plan for the phasing of the construction work that will be necessary to convert the campus into the new Career and Technical Education Campus. A 60,000 square-foot addition will be built during the school year with some renovation activities taking place within the campus during the school year. However, the work will be managed in such a way as to minimize any disruption during the daily instruction days.

The first construction activities are scheduled at South Keller Intermediate as early as May.
KISD has selected VLK Architects as the design team for the Keller High and Bear Creek Intermediate projects. VLK has conducted several meetings over the past two months to collect feedback regarding the design of the proposed building additions and other improvements for both of the projects. Improvements to the KHS band hall and fine arts areas have been designed along with additional classrooms and improvements to the front entry of the campus to help improve security and class-to-class circulation throughout the building.

The District has identified Huckabee Architects for the design of the New Elementary Campus that will be built in the West Fork community, west of Interstate 35W and north of Basswood Boulevard. The firm has also been meeting with campus and central administration to determine designs for both the New Early Learning Center facility as well as the additions at Parkwood Hill and Hillwood.

In addition to the work and planning for these major construction projects, the District has also been working with contractors that will be addressing Keller ISD’s technology infrastructure needs, along with those that will be updating the District’s security and camera systems.
