Nimitz Academic Decathlon Finishes Second in National Competition
The Nimitz High School Academic Decathlon team competed in its first ever national-level contest, the USAD Large School National Online Competition, on April 17 and garnered a silver finish behind a team from California. Several Nimitz students placed in the top five individually. Rebecca Van Pamel, the team’s top scoring individual the last two years, continued the streak with a gold in essay, silvers in art and social science, bronze in economics and fourth-place finishes in literature, science and overall total among A students. Her twin sister, Rachel Van Pamel, finished first in art; fourth in literature, music, math, economics, social science and overall total among C students; and fifth in science. Brian Vigen garnered silvers in music and literature, a bronze in social science, fourth in art and fifth in science, economics and overall total among C students. Aron Mathai finished fourth in literature, music, science and economics and fifth in overall total score among B students. Carlos Estevis snagged second in math and fifth in art, while Alex Zapata finished fifth in math. Miguel Reyes and Martin Ortega also participated.
