Medical City Fort Worth Nurse Fights Hunger from the Rooftop

Medical City Fort Worth Nurse Fights Hunger from the Rooftop

Annual community food drive has lofty 150,000 pound food goal

FORT WORTH – Robin Evans-Hanson, a registered nurse at Medical City Fort Worth, will climb up and live on the rooftop of a Kennedale church at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 2, to raise awareness, food and funds for food pantries in North Texas. She vows to stay on the roof until she reaches a goal of 150,000 pounds in food donations to the “Robin on the Roof” food drive.

Evans-Hanson performs this act of charity the first weekend in June each year because it’s symbolic of summer vacation when many families struggle to feed children without school-supplied meals. As a nurse, she knows also that sick patients often forego necessary medicines in order to feed their families.

“A lot of times when people are food insecure, maybe they’ve lost a job, had an illness – people are not taking their medicines because they can’t afford it,” Evans-Hanson says. “They’ve opted to take care of their family instead. I knew I needed to do something. As a nurse, you’re a servant, so you need to be in the community – that’s where the real nursing starts. What we try to do through ‘Robin on the Roof’ is raise awareness of the need and, where we can, help those in need.”

While “Robin on the Roof” is obviously named after the annual charity event’s founder, Evans-Hanson says she believes anyone can be a robin.

“Robins signify the first sign of spring. It’s a new beginning for everyone,” Evans said. “On the roof, you’re out of your situation or crisis and can see everything more clearly. You are not alone.”

Food donations can be dropped off at the First United Methodist Church of Kennedale, 229 West 4th Street in Kennedale, beginning at 9 a.m. on June 2. Volunteers from the Community Food Bank of Fort Worth, one of the local organizations that benefits from Robin on the Roof, will also be collecting donations in the lobby of Medical City Fort Worth, 900 8th Avenue in Fort Worth, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, June 2.
