HEB ISD: Differentiating Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions at Central Junior High

HEB ISD: Differentiating Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions at Central Junior High

Students in Ben Herman’s 8th grade science classes at Central Junior High differentiated between endothermic and exothermic reactions. Students mixed a calcium chloride solution with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide with raw liver. The students observed chemical and physical reactions between vinegar and baking soda as well as Alka Seltzer tablets and water. During the activities, the students rotated stations and recorded observations from their experiments. They also balanced the written chemical reactions to demonstrate their knowledge of the Law of Conservation of Mass. The lab provided the science students hands on learning involving common chemical reactions.
