NISD: Eaton baseball team wins state championship
Eaton High School’s Eagle baseball team became state champions on Saturday, winning the UIL’s 5A title with a strong season-ending performance.
The Eagles beat the Jackrabbits of Forney High School by a score of 4-1, earning the first team state championship in the school’s short history. This marks the team’s second year of varsity competition and first year with a senior class.
Senior pitcher Riley Taylor was named the MVP of the 5A state championship game, following a dominant complete-game performance that included seven strikeouts.
The Eagles advanced to the state title game following a tense state semifinal against the Panthers of Kingwood Park High School. In that game, which lasted an extra inning, Eaton won 3-2 on a walk-off hit by junior outfielder Colbie Fritchen.
Following the UIL’s championship games, four Eaton players joined Riley on the 5A all-tournament team: junior outfielder Jack Angus, senior second-baseman Sean Klein, senior third-baseman Colby Seltzer and junior catcher Brock Webber.
Eaton High School will move up to the UIL’s 6A classification in 2018-19, competing in athletic districts with Northwest ISD’s other 6A campus, Byron Nelson High School. The school’s athletic schedules for the coming year can be seen at www.nisdtx.org/athletics once they have been announced.
