NISD: Construction crews hard at work on school projects this summer

While students are on summer break, Northwest ISD is busy preparing for the 2018-19 school year. This summer, seven campuses are actively under construction.

The school district’s 18th elementary school, Lizzie Curtis Elementary School, is advancing quickly with daily construction progress until the doors open on Aug. 27 for students. The school is located in Hawthorne Meadows, a new subdivision in Fort Worth, and is named after the first teacher in Haslet, Alice “Lizzie” Curtis.

Along with Lizzie Curtis, Northwest ISD is opening its sixth middle school this fall, Leo Adams Middle School. The campus is nearing completion, with furniture and supplies currently being delivered. Adams Middle School is located next to V.R. Eaton High School and Carl E. Schluter Elementary School, off U.S. Highway 287 and Willow Springs Road. The campus is named after a Northwest ISD founder and former school board member.

Another active construction site is the expansion of J. Lyndal Hughes Elementary School in Fort Worth. The additions are due to overall district enrollment growth and will bring the student capacity of the campus from 650 to the 850 established district standard at the elementary level. Renovations and additions include classrooms, an additional music and art classroom, as well as expanding the gymnasium and cafeteria. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the start of school in August.

Hatfield and Prairie View elementary schools are receiving roof and HVAC improvements, and the Kelly W. Box Agricultural Sciences Center is undergoing renovations to the existing show arenas and barns as well as adding a third barn to accommodate the growth and interest in district programs it serves, such as FFA.

While these construction projects are scheduled to be completed around the start of school for 2018-19, another campus is being worked on for the following school year. Northwest ISD broke ground on Lance Thompson Elementary School with a ceremony on June 27. Funds to construct this school were included in the 2017 bond package, and it is expected to open in August 2019. To view pictures from the event, click here.
