KISD: Caprock Elementary Offers Students Morning Choice
Caprock Elementary is offering Morning Choice to all students in first through fourth grades as a new way to encourage students to be excited about school in the mornings.
This year, the students are allowed to go straight to their classroom when the doors open at 7:25 a.m. From 7:25 to 7:55 a.m. students participate in Morning Choice, where they are able to engage in activities that promote 21st century skills such as teamwork, collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking. CES students pick from different activities they want to do each morning such as artistic expression, gaming, collaboration projects, computer time, and leadership activities.
Last year fourth grade teachers started hosting Morning Choice to help bring activities and hobbies into the classroom that students are passionate about and as a way to tie in important 21st century skills. After they saw such positive results – such as students rushing to get to school, a reduced number of tardies and absences, improved classroom community, and students who were more prepared for the day – they brought the idea to the entire staff. The CES staff then decided together to bring the initiative to more grade levels this year.
As a campus, they are seeing that Morning Choice encourages students to arrive to school on time, and gives them the opportunity to build relationships and have fun, all while setting the tone for a positive and successful day!
