KHS Swim Wins Regionals, 18 From KISD Headed To State

Keller High School’s swimming and diving team won the Region 1-6A Team Championships in both the Girls and Boys divisions on Saturday, February 2, and will send 15 swimmers and divers to this month’s State Championship Meet, along with three other Keller ISD student-athletes.

Keller High’s girls team racked up 407 points at the Regional Meet hosted by Lubbock’s Pete Ragus Aquatic Center. Midland finished in second with 262 points. The KHS boys finished with 367 team points and a commanding 73-point margin in front of second-place Mansfield.

KHS was especially dominant in the relays at Regionals, winning four of the six such events, and qualifying for state in each of them. Its Girls 200-Yard Medley Relay made up of Skye Pineda, Parisa Beladi, Gretchen Mabry, and Margaret Mabry, won its final with a time of 1:48.68 to start off a successful day for Keller High. The Boys 200 Medley Relay team of Sam Lucas, Noah Beladi, Tyler Johns, and Dylan Tran followed-up with a first-place finish, posting a time of 1:34.07 that set new school and regional records.

Later, Keller High collected wins in the Boys 200 Freestyle Relay with Johns, Beladi, Jay Jani, and Michael Merryman, and the Boys 400 Free Relay with Merryman, Johns, Lucas, and Tran, setting another regional record in the latter. The KHS girls teams would finish third and second in those same events, both qualifying for State.

Individual Regional Champions for Keller High included Lucas who set a new team record on his way to winning the Boys 200 Individual Medley, and Johns who won the Boys 100 Butterfly with the fourth fastest qualifying time in the state.

Central High School swimmer Donald Scott also had a successful meet, winning the Boys 200 Free with a time of 1:40.37, and the Boys 100 Breaststroke with a time of 56.92.

Fossil Ridge High School diver Rachel Dickerson won the Region 1-6A Diving Championship with a score of 437.75, edging out Keller High’s Kinzie Etzelmiller who finished with 411.70. Both qualified for the State Championships.

Timber Creek High School swimmer Maci Finder also qualified for State, finishing as runner-up in the Girls 200 Free race with a time of 1:55.91.
