NISD: District wrestlers earn seven podium finishes, two titles at state tournament

Northwest ISD’s wrestlers earned seven podium finishes at the recent UIL Wrestling State Tournament, including four top-three finishes, two of which were state championships.

Byron Nelson High School junior Lexie Basham earned her second consecutive state title, winning the 6A girls 138-pound division, while Northwest High School junior Aiden Jean earned a state title in the 5A boys 182-pound division.

Senior Kaylynn Albrecht of Byron Nelson added to the district’s top-three finishes by earning a silver medal for her second-place finish in the 6A girls 165-pound division. Northwest senior Madison Brown also earned a top-three finish, earning a bronze medal for her third-place finish in the 5A girls 102-pound division.

Three other Northwest ISD wrestlers also earned podium finishes, each finishing in sixth place: Eaton’s Jose Coubles (6A boys 195-pound division), Northwest’s Landon Brown (5A boys 113-pound division), Ayanna Potter (5A girls 185-pound division).

In addition to the student success, two Northwest ISD coaches earned top honors in their field. Byron Nelson’s Carlos Ornelas was named 6A Girls Coach of the Year, and Northwest’s Jessica Fresh was named 5A Girls Coach of the Year.
