CISD: CSHS Dragon Yearbook Wins Big at CSPA

Last week members of Carrol Senior High School Dragon Media received a top award for scholastic publications from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

The 2018 “The Dragon” yearbook was awarded a Silver Crown from CSPA, one of only 55 high schools in the country to receive the honor. The Crown Awards are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison and publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage, and writing.

“The Dragon” yearbook is a completely student-run, 350+ page publication advised by CSHS teacher and Dragon Media adviser, Mrs. Natalie Brown. The 2018 book was edited by Mattison Pennington who is a freshman at Baylor University studying journalism. Current yearbook editors are Nicole James, Josh McSwain and Jessica Melocik who also served on the editorial board of the 2018 book. These four students attended the CSPA annual convention in New York City last week to learn from industry professionals, Columbia University professors, and other media advisers as well as pick up their Crown during the final awards ceremony.

In addition to the CSPA Silver Crown, “The Dragon” received top-level critiques from the state journalism conference, ILPC, as well as the National Scholastic Press Association’s All American Award with four marks of distinction this year.

The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges, and award programs. Owned by Columbia University since 1925, CSPA is operated as a program affiliated with its Graduate School of Journalism.
