NISD: District names elementary Writers of the Month for April 2019
Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for March 2019, honoring three students for their academic capabilities.
This month’s honorees include Rylan Taylor from Granger Elementary School, Nathan Ackah from Hatfield Elementary School and Keren Hamuli from Hughes Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.
Rylan recently wrote about her favorite festivities from holidays. She said she learned to improve her writing by reading the works of others and seeing what she likes by other authors. Nathan recently wrote a short fiction story about a contest winner who goes on a trip and encounters danger. He said he now tries to be imaginative and descriptive in his writing. Keren recently wrote about her experience of watching Christmas movies to celebrate the holiday. She said she likes both fiction and nonfiction, because she can be imaginative in the former and share her feelings in the latter.
The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.
Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
