NISD: Dazzlers, Sapphires, Sidekicks finish competitions with top performances

Northwest ISD’s high school drill teams – the Byron Nelson Dazzlers, Eaton Sapphires and Northwest Sidekicks – recently completed their competition seasons, earning top marks for their performances at state and national meets.

For their final competition, the Dazzlers competed in the San Antonio Alamo Dance Classic Contest, receiving the Best of the Best Team and Officer awards. As a team, the Dazzlers also earned: Sweepstakes Award, Gussie Nell Davis Award, Platinum Award, Judges’ Award and the Wow Factor Award.

Two Byron Nelson dancers finished near the top in the soloist category, with Claire Land receiving first runner-up honors and Victoria Mauer receiving second runner-up honors. In the duo competition, Sadie Sinnwell and Callie Frank earned first-runner up honors.

The Sapphires finished their season at the American Dance Drill Team National/International competition in Miami, competing in the largest classification. Notably, the Sapphires won the American Academic Champions award with a team GPA of 4.253. As a team, the Sapphires placed in four other national categories: kick (second runner-up), jazz (second runner-up), show (third runner-up) and national champion teams (fourth runner-up). They also placed in four international categories: show (third runner-up), open (second runner-up), kick (fourth runner-up) and jazz (fifth runner-up).

In the solo competition, Eaton’s Darian Foley finished in a tie for second runner-up and Emma Zeske finished tied for fourth runner-up.

Northwest’s Sidekicks completed their season in Galveston at the ShowTime Nationals competition. The Sidekicks earned National Grand Champion Team honors, with the following additional team awards: kick (first place), pom (first place), lyrical (second place) and hip-hop (second place). The team also earned two special awards, Kick Master in the kick competition and the highest overall score for all teams in that event. The team’s leaders won National Grand Champion Officers honors along with first place in the officer lyrical and jazz competitions as well as second place in the contemporary competition.

In the solo competition, Northwest was represented by two dancers earning top places: Kayla Rasmussen, who finished in fourth place of the senior competition, and Sydney Lowe, who finished in third place of the junior competition. Sydney also won the Nationals Kick Master individual award.
