TSMS Nurse Named Keller Isd School Nurse Of The Year

TSMS Nurse Named Keller Isd School Nurse Of The Year

Keller ISD has named Brenda Selzer, Trinity Springs Middle School Nurse, as the District’s School Nurse of the Year for 2018-19.

Selzer was nominated by one of her peers and honored at an end-of-the-year celebration on May 16.

The Keller ISD School Nurse of the Year Award is based off of the National Association of School Nurses Framework for the 21st Century School Nursing Practice. Central to the Framework is student-centered nursing care, surrounded by care coordination, leadership, quality improvement, community/public health and the standards of nursing practice.

Selzer’s nominator said she is an outstanding positive role model for fellow nurses in Keller ISD.

“She has exhibited excellence in nursing in many ways, including managing a busy clinic day-to-day and mentoring new nurses. I have called her on many occasions to ask advice or get a second opinion. I am always reassured by her calm demeanor and mild manner. Talking to her coworkers, they told me the same things I already knew about her – things like, ‘she handles ten plus kids sometimes,’ ‘she runs the place with a smile on her face,’ and ‘she goes above and beyond to find the answer to provide care for her students and staff.’ One of her coworkers mentioned that she makes a special effort to focus on students with challenges by making sure they have access to immunizations, snacks and other essentials. One new-to-KISD nurse said she is a good teacher, very organized and ‘the most patient person I have ever worked with.'”

“Selzer is the kind of person who gives her all without expecting awards and exhibits clinical competence, student-centered care, professionalism and true community-centered approach to her job,” Director of Health Services Cindy Parsons said. “She is always willing to help when I need a campus to place a new sub or new nurse. She is always positive about helping with training or mentoring a nurse and even offered to teach District CPR classes this year.”

Also nominated for Keller ISD School Nurse of the Year were:

  • Debbie Gregor, Keller High School
  • Cassie Moore, Eagle Ridge Elementary School
“I appreciate this recognition and honor, and I am blessed to be able to work with my fellow nursing peers who are skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate,” Selzer said. “I would also like to thank the staff at Trinity Springs Middle School who love what they do everyday and are a pleasure to work with. Most importantly, I would like to thank Cindy Parsons, Director of Health Services who has supported me through the years and has always been an inspiration and shining example of exceptional school nursing.”
Selzer has worked for Keller ISD since 2004, and been with Trinity Springs Middle School since 2007.
