KISD: KHS’s Brian Ketcham Wins Region 11 Secondary Teacher Of The Year

KISD: KHS’s Brian Ketcham Wins Region 11 Secondary Teacher Of The Year

Region 11 Texas Education Service Center has named Keller High School teacher Brian Ketcham as its 2019 Regional Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Ketcham was nominated for the honor by earning Keller ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year recognition in the spring of 2019. The Education Service Center announced both Ketcham and Region 11 Elementary Teacher of the Year Karen Sams from Weatherford ISD at its annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Thursday evening, August 1. Region 11 considered 71 teacher of the year selections from 39 of the school districts it represents for this year’s regional recognitions.

Also at the banquet, Keller ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year Mindy Ingram from Lone Star Elementary, was honored as a Region 11 essay winner for her application essay about a lesson that defines her teaching.

Next up for Ketcham, he will join the other 20 regional teachers of the year throughout Texas to be considered for State Teacher of the Year Honors. From those 20, three will be selected as State Semifinalists for final consideration for Teacher of the Year.

“I am extremely humbled by this honor,” Ketcham said. “There are thousands of tremendous educators within Region 11, many of whom I consider mentors and whose experience I have used as a model for how I teach. So it means so much to me to receive this recognition. I’m not sure what will come next, but I’m excited to represent KISD and to have an additional platform to speak out about the value and strength of public education in this country.”

Ketcham teaches Technical Theatre at Keller High, where he’s been since 2016. The 2001 graduate of Fossil Ridge High School returned to Keller ISD right out of college in 2006 to teach U.S. History at Hillwood Middle School. After nine years at Hillwood, Ketcham taught for a year at Timberview Middle School before moving to KHS.

“We are extremely proud of Mr. Ketcham and excited that his commitment and passion for educating Keller ISD students over the past 13 years was recognized by Region 11,” said Keller ISD Superintendent Dr. Rick Westfall. “Mr. Ketcham is a tremendous example of the exceptional teachers in our District, and this honor is well deserved.”

State-level semifinalist judging will take place in August with a panel of judges composed of members of teacher associations selecting the three finalists. Finalists will be notified in September and interviewed in October. The winners will be announced at the Texas Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony in October 2019.

Congratulations to both Keller ISD Teachers of the Year and best of luck to Mr. Ketcham throughout the State Teacher of the Year process!
