HEB ISD annual Leadership Symposium
We recently hosted our annual Leadership Symposium, where our campus-level and district-level leaders meet for two days of seminars and prepare for the new school year.
We had great speakers and workshops, and we also celebrated with some great data, beginning with stakeholder surveys.
The average score given by parents of all dimensions of school climate was above 90 percent. Parents rated the areas of academic preparation, student support, school leadership, and parent engagement.
In addition, 92 percent of community member participants rated the value of education services in HEB ISD an “A” or a “B,” 92 percent of parent participants rated their child’s school as “A” or “B,” and 93 percent of parent participants rated the quality of their child’s teachers as an “A” or “B.”
We saw incremental gains in student performance on state assessments from 2012-2013 to 2013-2014. If we continue to make these gains every year, we will close the achievement gap, as we did when we were under the TAKS assessment system.
We also got some great news about our International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Our passing rate for the 2013-2014 school year was 82 percent. IB is an internationally-recognized program established in 1968 and noted for its depth and challenging curriculum. It is a rigorous pre-university course of study where students test in six subject areas.
What makes the HEB ISD pass rate even more significant is the fact that many IB schools around the world, including the United States, are private schools or magnet schools that do not accept all students. HEB ISD offers IB at both high schools and the program is open to all students. The IB program provides students with access to the world’s leading universities. Students who earn an IB Diploma have a true head start on successful post-secondary and post-collegiate life.
This is truly a great way to begin the new school year.
