Leticia Van de Putte Announces Texas Promise Scholarship, Free Community College and Technical Education
Today, Senator Leticia Van de Putte released her Texas First Higher Education plan. Leticia’s Texas First policy plans focus on building a smart economy, strong communities, and secure families.
Van de Putte laid out the Texas Promise scholarship, a plan for free tuition and fees at community and technical colleges across Texas for up to two years.
Van de Putte proposes that the scholarship be funded using interest from existing state funds, no new taxes. Funding would be approved by Texas voters via constitutional amendment. Texas Promise is based on the bipartisan Tennessee Promise signed into law by a Republican governor.

Leticia’s Texas First higher education plan also ensures strong partnerships between businesses, school districts, and colleges. She calls for a modern work study program that requires degree-related work internships. Recognizing the role of universities to the state’s economy, Leticia supports investing in higher education and strengthening supports for institutions seeking tier one research status.
