Small Change Leads to Big Results in Community Outreach
In February, three Colleyville Elementary School students came to their Principal Sheila Shimmick to discuss a community outreach proposal they developed. Fifth-graders J.D. Rice and Trey Leathers, along with Third-grader Justin Leathers, shared with Shimmick their desire to help raise $3,000 for GRACE, a local nonprofit relief agency.
In February, a fire broke out in GRACE’s Donation Station facility. According to a GRACE press release, no injuries occurred, but damage was overwhelming. The fire caused loss to clothing, as well as sorting bins, clothing racks, staging structures and an equipment shed.
The students shared details about the GRACE fire with Shimmick and asked if Colleyville ES could raise money for GRACE to help them rebuild and restock.
