KISD AVID Hosts ‘Every Step for Autism’ 5K Fun Run/Walk, May 23
Keller ISD AVID programs are excited to host this year’s “Every Step for Autism” 5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, May 23 at Fossil Ridge High School.
KISD AVID continues their partnership with FEAT-NT (Families for Effective Autism Treatment-North Texas) to help improve the lives of those affected by Autism. The CDC announced recently that 1-in-68 children have Autism with 1-in-42 boys. This is a dramatic 30 percent increase from 1-in-88 children just two years ago. FEAT-NT is a non-profit organization founded 17 years ago to provide services to those directly impacted by Autism in the community, including Keller families. This organization is almost solely run by volunteer parents of children with Autism. They mentor families with the daily struggles of raising a child with Autism by helping them find resources, provide tools for intervention, and a network of other families to lean on and share their stories. In addition, they have a resource library of 600 books, as well as provide scholarships to parents and teachers for Autism training at their annual Autism Conference.
This year, the “Every Step for Autism” event will be a Family Fun Day and Walk around the FRHS Track, which is free for families to attend, and will include bounce houses, carnival games, free crafts, shade tents, concession stands, face painting, live entertainment, mascots, and children’s characters! In addition, there will be a 5K Fun Run. The cost is $15/person (includes t-shirt) and begins at 8 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT-NT), with a portion going back to Keller ISD’s AVID programs.
