Haltom City Hosts Sam Houston
Local History Buffs Attend the Birdville Cemetery Reunion With Special Guest Jack Edmondson
Haltom City, Texas, May 20, 2015 – The 19th annual Birdville Cemetery Reunion was held on May 16, 2015. This year’s event featured a tour of the historic cemetery led by Bill Reeves with the Birdville Cemetery Association, as well as the living history of the early days of Tarrant County seen through the eyes of Republic of Texas President, Sam Houston, as told by Jack Edmondson. Jack is a retired history teacher who has authored several books and over fifty magazine articles about Texas history. With its first burial dated back to 1852, Birdville Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Tarrant County. Notable figures resting there include Benjamin Franklin Barkley, who was the first judge in Tarrant County, and Archibald Franklin Leonard, who helped to build and organize Tarrant County. The attendees enjoyed lunch provided by the Birdville Historical Society. The Birdville Cemetery is located at 6000 Cemetery Road in Haltom City, Texas.
