Ridgeview Student Raises Funds for Nepal Earthquake Victims
Niva Maskey, a fourth grade student at Ridgeview Elementary, recently raised funds in order to support the victims in Nepal after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit on April 25, 2015.
At Ridgeview Elementary’s Open House in the spring, she sold candy and water to guests, and raised more than $550 on that night alone. She also approached family and friends, asking for additional contributions to her cause.
With the funds raised, Maskey was able to personally visit three schools impacted by the earthquake in Nepal and distribute school supplies and athletic equipment to 235 children during the summer.
More than 9,000 people lost their lives and 23,000 were injured in the earthquake. Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless with entire villages flattened, across many districts of the country.
Maskey was featured on the national news in Nepal as an inspiration that children can do their part to make the world a better place if they put their mind to it.
