CISD: Dragon Baseball Wins Third State Championship

The 2018 Dragon Baseball team has officially added their team to the Carroll history books joining the 1982 and the 2002 baseball state champion teams. The Dragons defeated the Rattlers from San Antonio Reagan on Saturday to clinch the school’s third state championship in baseball and it’s first in 16 years.

From the first at-bat on Saturday, it was obvious that the Dragons were here to finish the job that they fell just short of last season. An errant throw on a routine groundball pulled the Rattlers first baseman off the bag causing a hard collision with Dragon leadoff hitter Cade Bell. Later in the first, Will Quillen drove in two runs on a bases-clearing triple that started the offensive explosion. The Dragons went on to score five more runs through the first five innings.

Kyle Warden took the mound in the championship game after Nicco Cole threw a gem the night before to get the Dragons to the trophy match. Warden was spectacular throughout the entire game. He worked out of two potential jams in the middle of the game, and his only blemish came late in the game once the game was all but finished. Adam Stephenson came in to close the game out for the Dragons. His lone strikeout of the game clinched the game and the championship for the Dragons.

Kyle Warden was awarded the tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award. The one-two punch of Nicco Cole and Kyle Warden proved deadly all season long for Dragon opponents. The two combined for a 21-1 record overall and a spotless undefeated record in the playoffs.

Nicco Cole, Kyle Warden, Cade Bell, Jorge Figueroa, and Nik Millsap were all named to the All-Tournament team.
