NISD: Byron Nelson alumna Sanaa Barnes finishes second at US Track & Field Junior Championships
Recent Byron Nelson High School graduate Sanaa Barnes finished second at the U.S. Track & Field Junior Championships in the high jump, clearing the six-foot mark for the first time in her career.
Sanaa earned the silver medal at the national meet with a jump of 1.85 meters, or about 6 feet, 1 inch. Her height was the same as the gold medalists’ jump, just missing out on the top spot based on earlier missed jumps. Her place marks
the second consecutive year Sanaa has earned the silver medal at the top national meet for athletes younger than 20.
By finishing second, Sanaa has qualified for the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland. She is scheduled to jump in the preliminary round on July 13; if she qualifies for the final round, she will then compete on July 15.
During the 2018 UIL Track & Field State Meet, Sanaa earned a silver medal in the girls 6A high jump with a height of 5 feet, 9 inches. She is the 2017 state champion in the 6A girls high jump. The recent Byron Nelson alumna will compete for Villanova in both volleyball and track and field in the coming year.
