NISD: District names elementary Writers of the Month for February 2019
Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for February 2019, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.
This month’s honorees include Kellen Hunter from Beck Elementary School, Marquelle Hayward from Haslet Elementary School, Alyvia Williams from Love Elementary School and James Looney from Seven Hills Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.
Kellen recently wrote a biographical paper about Babe Ruth, who he cited as one of the best baseball players of all time. He said he also likes to make up his own stories. Marquelle recently wrote a 10-chapter book about orphaned children who make their way through the world. She said she likes using her creativity when writing. Alyvia recently wrote an essay about the importance of writing. She said she likes to add personality in her writing. James recently wrote about an experience running. He said he’s learned to add dialogue to his writing this year, which entices the reader.
The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.
Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
