CISD: Junior Wins National Essay Competition

CISD: Junior Wins National Essay Competition

Little did Carroll Senior High School student Caitlin Davidson know when she completed her class research project for her American Studies course that she would soon be planning a trip to New York City to receive an award for the top Civil War essay in the country.

Every year in Mr. Irish’s class, juniors have to write a research paper for class. If they choose to write on the Civil War, they can submit their essay to a national essay contest presented by The Gilder Lehrman Institute.

Davidson will be traveling to New York in April to attend the dinner and awards ceremony put on by Gilder Lehrman. This essay contest is for Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School students in grades 5–12. Students research topics surround the Civil War and produce an essay ranging from 1550-1800 words and must include sources from the Gilder Lehrman archive.

For Davidson, this was a very interesting learning experience.

‘I wrote my paper on the American Colonization Society and Racism in the Abolitionist Movement,” Davidson says. “It was very interesting to see learn about not only the positive portions of the history but to learn that there were negative aspects and attitudes in our country at this time as well.”

Davidson is not only receiving the trip and recognition in New York, but she will also personally be awarded $1000 and an additional $500 will be presented to Carroll Senior High School.
