Keller ISD’s regional-qualifying high school swimmers and divers competed at the UIL 6A Region 1 Swimming and Diving Championships January 30-February 1 in Lubbock, coming away with one team championship, six individual championships, and 15 State qualifiers. 

KHS Girls Swim Team poses with its Regional Championship trophy Keller High’s girls team finished as Regional Champions as a group, collecting a decisive 391.5 points, easily eclipsing second-place Mansfield (308). The Indians were lead by senior Grace Anderson and her freestyle stroke. Anderson won the 50-Yard Free with a Region 1-6A record time of 23.71 seconds. She also collected a championship in the 100 Free, finishing in 51.62, and was part of Keller High’s state-qualifying 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay teams. Both relays finished second at Regionals. Freese Hubert, Michaela Gradyon, and Kalie Landrum joined Anderson on the 200 Free Relay, and Landrum Margaret Mabry, and Skye Pineda made up the other spots of the 400 Free Relay. 

Mabry also qualified for State with her second-place finish in the 100 Backstroke (56.94) and in the 400 Medley Relay along with Pineda, Sammi Thiele, and Gretchen Mabry. The 400 Medley Relay team finished fourth at Regionals, but its time of 1:48.70 was good enough to qualify for State. 

The KHS Boys also sent athletes to State and had a pair of Regional Champions among them. Sam Lucas won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:52.64, and teammate Noah Beladi also qualified in the event, finishing in third place, but less than half a second behind Lucas (1:52.97). Beladi won a Regional Championship in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 56.30. Both also made up half of the second-place, State-qualifying 200 Medley Relay team which included Fabrizio D’Orsi and Oliver Koehne. 

Elsewhere in the pool, Timber Creek High’s Maci Finder won the Girls 500 Free event, posting a time of 5:04.08, to qualify for the State Championships. 

Fossil Ridge High also collected a Regional Championship as sophomore Rachel Dickerson won the Girls 1-Meter Diving competition with a score of 447.65 to earn a spot at State. Keller High senior Kinzie Etzelmiller finished third in the diving event to qualify for State as well. 

The 2020 UIL Class 6A State Swimming and Diving Championships are set for February 14-15 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
