The City of Roanoke is encouraging residents to take simple steps before, during and after winter weather to protect their homes and local waterways.
Rain, melting snow and ice can carry pollutants directly into local creeks and waterways. Preparing in advance can help reduce that risk while supporting cleaner water throughout the community.
Residents should keep gutters and storm drains clear of leaves and other debris. Ice melt and salt should be used sparingly, as excess material can be carried into waterways when snow and ice melt.
The city also advises residents to pick up pet waste and store chemicals properly. After a storm, residents should check for clogged drains and erosion around their properties.
The guidance is part of the City of Roanoke’s “Winter Weather & Stormwater Safety!” message, which highlights actions residents can take to help protect the community’s water before, during and after winter weather.
