The City of Hurst is encouraging families to stay safe while trick-or-treating this Halloween with six reminders focused on walking routes, costumes, drivers and candy.
The city recommends trick-or-treating with trusted neighbors and visiting familiar neighborhoods with well-lit homes. Children should carry flashlights to help them remain visible.
Costumes, candy bags and pails should be reflective. Costumes should not drag on the ground, and masks, hats and shoes should fit properly to help prevent trips and falls.
Drivers should watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs during trick-or-treat hours. The city advises drivers to enter and exit driveways carefully and turn on headlights early to help spot children from farther away.
Children should stay on well-marked paths, use sidewalks and avoid cutting across yards or using alleys. When possible, they should cross roads at crosswalks.
The city also recommends checking candy before it is eaten. Candy should be discarded if it has loose wrappings, is completely unwrapped, has puncture holes or is homemade and not factory-wrapped.
The City of Hurst is wishing everyone a fun and safe Halloween and encourages families to keep these reminders in mind before heading out to trick-or-treat.
