Winter has arrived, Bedford! With chilly weather on the way this season, here are a few tips and reminders:

Remember the 4 P’s

  • People: Check in on your elderly neighbors, family, and anyone you know that may be vulnerable in winter conditions.
  • Pets: Bring your furry friends inside! If it’s too cold outside for you, it is for them too.
  • Plants: Bring plants inside or use a sheet/blanket to cover plants that must remain outside.
  • Pipes: Cover outdoor pipes and spigots to prevent freezing and breaks. Also, don’t forget to turn off your sprinkler systems.

How to Turn Off Water in an Emergency

If you don’t know how to locate and shut off water for your home, please watch the City’s video to review how to safely turn off your water.

If you need assistance with turning off your water in an emergency, please contact Public Works at 817-952-2200 during normal business hours. For after-hour emergencies, call the Police Dispatch non-emergency line at 817-952-2127.

Pay Attention to Weather Reports

For the latest weather updates, make sure you’re following the National Weather Service Facebook page for our area and the local news stations.

In the event of any inclement weather this season, updates to City services (City facility closings, trash and recycling delays, etc.) will be released on the City’s website and social media channels, when available.

Any school cancellations will be announced by HEB ISD.

Atmos Energy Reminders

  • Protect Natural Gas Meters: Remove snow and ice from natural gas meters with a broom or brush. Never kick or chip snow and ice away with a hard object.
  • Unblock Vents: Make sure external vents for dryers and other natural gas appliances are clear.
  • Heat Source Alert: Never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home.
  • Minimize Frozen Pipe Risk: Leave faucets running at a trickle, leave cabinet doors open, and close all doors and windows to keep heat inside.

Although natural gas outages are infrequent, if you experience loss of natural gas service or low gas pressure, contact the Atmos Energy emergency line at 866-322-8667. Atmos Energy agents are available 24/7.

Heating Tips

  • Give heaters space.
  • Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords.
  • Place heaters on a hard and level surface.
  • Turn them off when you leave the room or are sleeping.
  • Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended.
  • Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes.
