Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has expanded Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway by approximately 2,200 acres, increasing the park’s total size to about 17,500 acres across the rugged landscape of the Texas Panhandle.
The expansion includes two key acquisitions in Briscoe County: the 1,120-acre Hawkins Ranch, purchased in January 2026, and the 1,066-acre Rocking W Ranch, acquired in 2024. These additions extend the park westward and northwest, helping preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the Caprock Escarpment.
“These are two beautiful pieces of property,” said Superintendent Donald Beard. “The Hawkins Ranch is the last piece of property to the west [of the park] that protects our viewshed of the canyon and affects our watershed. The Rocking W Ranch was also important because it expands the park to the northwest, allowing the Texas State Bison Herd potential access to the high plains.”
The newly acquired Hawkins Ranch features more than 4 miles of Holmes Creek and Dry Creek, along with sweeping views of the surrounding canyon landscape. The property is home to a variety of native wildlife, including quail, mule deer, coyotes, and bobcats.
Meanwhile, the Rocking W Ranch includes a 5,000-square-foot furnished barndominium, which officials say could be used in the future for family-style retreats and outdoor recreation programs such as hiking and horseback riding.
Caprock Canyons State Park is known for its dramatic red rock formations, expansive trail system spanning nearly 90 miles, and its role as home to the official Texas State Bison Herd. The park also features Clarity Tunnel, where visitors can observe bats, and has been designated an International Dark Sky Park, offering exceptional stargazing opportunities.
With the acquisitions finalized, TPWD will begin conducting environmental and cultural surveys to guide long-term planning. Future public input will help shape how the new land is used, with potential recreational opportunities including camping, hiking, and biking.
Officials note that it may take several months to complete planning efforts, but updates—including a possible opening timeline—will be shared as progress continues.
