May is Military Appreciation Month and to acknowledge Fort Worth’s long military heritage, the Diversity & Inclusion Employee Committee hosted an opportunity earlier this month for employees to express their gratitude to our soldiers and troops — especially those based here at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth.

Bigger in Texas: Employees signed a Texas-sized appreciation card that was then delivered to the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. The card was received by Commander Clayton Johnson, NAS JRB Fort Worth executive officer.

Additionally, a sign listing the names of all known City employees who are veterans will remain on display on the second floor of Old City Hall just outside Council Chamber through the end of the month to recognize their service. The list of employee veterans is compiled from responses received to an employee veteran survey conducted last fall.

Military Appreciation Month was initially recognized by a resolution in the U.S. Senate in 1999 and traditionally takes place every year throughout the entire month of May, reminding Americans to celebrate this patriotic month that pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

Although the entire month is designated to honoring past and present military members and their families, there are several, specific military holidays sprinkled throughout Military Appreciation Month itself, including Loyalty Day, VE Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.
