The Northwest Navigators, NISD’s Special Olympics team, is excited to kick off its track and field season. To ensure optimal safety and individualized instruction, there is a limit on the total number of participants for this season with only the first 35 athletes who sign up being accepted.
Who is able to participate in the Special Olympics?A student does not have to be receiving special education services from NISD in order to be eligible for Special Olympics. A student must meet the following criteria to be eligible to participate on the Northwest Navigators Special Olympics team:Ages 8-21 and enrolled in Northwest ISDBe identified as having an intellectual disability, cognitive delay, or significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delay that require or have required specially designed instructionUnlike many indoor sports, track and field takes place in a large, unenclosed environment. Because of this, student safety relies heavily on an athlete’s ability to remain within designated boundaries. For the safety of the individual and the team, athletes must be able to follow these spatial guidelines to participate in the program.
