Excitement filled the air on Thursday, August 7, 2025, as the Birdville ISD community celebrated a major milestone—the grand opening of the newly rebuilt David E. Smith Elementary. More than 800 students, staff, parents, and community leaders gathered in the school’s cafeteria for a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring the legacy of one of the district’s oldest schools, originally established in 1954.

Hosted by the BISD Board of Trustees, the ceremony was both a celebration of the school’s bright future and a tribute to its rich history. Superintendent Dr. Gayle Stinson emphasized the deeper meaning behind the event, saying, “Today is about more than a ribbon cutting – it is about legacy. With the ribbon cutting of this beautiful facility, we honor the legacy of David E. Smith, an individual who continues to impact Birdville ISD long after his retirement.”

In addition to Dr. Stinson, remarks were given by Board President Ralph Kunkel, Haltom City Mayor Dr. An Troung, and the school’s namesake, David E. Smith. Smith, who served as principal for nearly three decades when the school was known as Browning Heights Elementary, was honored when the campus was renamed for him in 1988 after his retirement.

The new David E. Smith Elementary features state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the needs of today’s learners, while also providing a welcoming environment that reflects the school’s longstanding commitment to excellence. Modern classrooms, updated technology, and enhanced spaces for collaboration ensure students have the tools they need to succeed.

For the Birdville ISD community, the new campus is more than just a building—it’s a symbol of perseverance, pride, and educational progress. As students and teachers step into this next chapter, the legacy of David E. Smith will continue to inspire generations to come.
