The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is alerting residents across the state to be on high alert for a widespread text message scam targeting unsuspecting drivers. The messages falsely claim to be from TxDMV or similarly named agencies and often threaten serious consequences for alleged unpaid tickets or toll violations.

The fraudulent texts typically warn recipients of immediate prosecution, suspension of vehicle registration, or loss of driving privileges unless they click a link to pay supposed fines. These messages are not legitimate and are designed to steal personal and financial information.

“Don’t click it. It’s not a ticket,” TxDMV warns.

The agency emphasized that:

  • TxDMV does not issue or collect fines for traffic or toll violations.
  • It does not send unsolicited text messages about alleged infractions.
  • It is not a law enforcement agency, nor does it threaten legal action via text.

🚫 What To Do If You Receive a Suspicious Text:

  • Do not click on any links.
  • Do not reply or share any personal or financial information.
  • Report the scam to:
