A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for our area beginning Friday afternoon (Jan. 23) through Sunday morning. The National Weather Service is anticipating some travel impacts throughout the weekend. Please make sure you’re staying updated on the latest developments, as they are changing daily.
What We’re Doing Now
Public Works crews will be out Tuesday and Wednesday pre-treating major throughfares in Bedford with a brine solution. Crews will continue to assess our roadways throughout the week.
As a reminder, the City does not brine neighborhood streets. Please double check and make sure your irrigation systems are turned off – we don’t want to see any ice rinks pop up on your sidewalks and streets!
Parks and Recreation staff have turned off the water fountains at the Bedford Bark Park and will be closing all park restrooms. Park restrooms and the Bark Park fountains will be available to the public again, once the temperature rises above freezing.
City Closures
The Bedford Public Library and Animal Shelter will be closed to the public this weekend, January 24 and 25.
Please note, since the Library will be closed, this means it will also be closed as a polling location for the Tarrant County Elections Office.
HEB Teen Court is canceled for Monday, January 26. For questions, contact HEB Teen Court at 817-952-2468 or email teen.court@bedfordtx.gov.
Emergency services in Bedford will continue to operate as usual.
The Bedford Center YMCA
Delays or closings of The Bedford Center YMCA will be communicated through their channels. View the facility’s Facebook page.
School Delays
All HEB ISD school delays/closures will be communicated through the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District channels.
How to Turn Off Water in an Emergency
If you don’t know how to locate and shut off water for your home, please watch the City’s YouTube video to review how to safely turn off your water.
If you need assistance with turning off your water in an emergency, please contact Public Works at 817-952-2200 during normal business hours. For after-hour emergencies, call the Police Dispatch non-emergency line at 817-952-2127.
Trash Delays
In the event of inclement weather, trash and recycling delays will be announced on the City’s website and social media channels, when available.
Warming Center
A warming center would be opened in Bedford under a couple of specific circumstances. One would be during a prolonged power outage, similar to what the community experienced in 2021. The other is whether it’s feasible for the appropriate staff to safely get to the facility and operate it, since warming centers do require on-site staffing. If those conditions are met, the City would partner with the YMCA to open The Bedford Center YMCA (2801 Forest Ridge Dr.) as a warming center.
The Texas Department of Emergency Management has posted a map of “seasonal relief” centers at www.tdem.texas.gov/warm.
Remember the 4 P’s
- People: Check in on your elderly neighbors, family, and anyone you know that may be vulnerable in winter conditions.
- Pets: Bring your furry friends inside! If it’s too cold outside for you, it is for them too.
- Plants: Bring plants inside or use a sheet/blanket to cover plants that must remain outside.
- Pipes: Cover outdoor pipes and spigots to prevent freezing and breaks.
Power Outages
If you lose power, outages can be reported directly to Oncor by texting “OUT” to 66267, calling 1-888-313-4747, or visiting https://stormcenter.oncor.com/.
Heating Tips
Keep these home safety tips in mind:
- Give heaters space.
- Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords.
- Place heaters on a hard and level surface.
- Turn them off when you leave the room or are sleeping.
- Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended.
- Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes.
Although natural gas outages are infrequent, if you experience loss of natural gas service or low gas pressure, contact the Atmos Energy emergency line at 866-322-8667. Atmos Energy agents are available 24/7.
