The Northwest Independent School District Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on Monday, August 25, discussing innovative academic programs, demographic trends, and district policy updates.
Innovative UAV Pilot Course
Trustees approved submitting an innovative course application to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) from the Aviation Academy at Eaton High School. The proposed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Pilot course was piloted with seven students in 2023 and developed with industry partners. If approved by TEA, it would become Texas’s first drone-focused high school course and launch districtwide in the 2026–2027 school year.
Demographics Report Shows Growth
A report by Zonda Demographics highlighted continued housing development across Northwest ISD, with the largest growth along SH 114 and near Tarrant-Wise county lines. In Q2 2025, new home starts increased 9.5% year-over-year, with over 4,600 lots ready for building and groundwork underway on more than 6,250 additional lots. Communities with the highest closings include Pecan Square (454), Madero (278), Wildflower Ranch (235), Northstar (229) and Shale Creek (179).
District of Innovation Plan Update
The board updated its District of Innovation Plan, including a streamlined grievance process, revised school library advisory council duties, adherence to district-level library challenge processes, and removal of outdated exemptions no longer allowed by state law.
Additional Actions
Trustees also recognized Granger and Nance elementary schools for Character.org Promising Practice Awards, honored five workers for digitizing student records ahead of schedule, and approved a resolution on Senate Bill 12 and parental rights.
