Palo Pinto Mountains State Park has officially opened to the public, marking a major milestone as Texas’ first new state park in a generation.

The long-anticipated opening on March 1 represents more than a decade of planning, collaboration, and community support. The project was brought to life through a partnership led by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, which spearheaded fundraising efforts and oversaw the development of visitor facilities and park amenities.

Through its campaign, the foundation raised $10 million in private funding, helping turn a long-standing vision into reality. The effort was made possible by significant philanthropic contributions from individuals and foundations, including Kelcy Warren, Lee and Ramona Bass, The Eugene McDermott Foundation, Amon G. Carter Foundation, the Thomas M., Helen McKee & John P. Ryan Foundation, Meta Alice Keith Bratten Foundation, The Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation, and the Marilyn Brachman Hoffman Foundation.

Supporters say the new park will offer Texans expanded access to outdoor recreation while preserving the natural beauty of the Palo Pinto Mountains region. The park is expected to become a premier destination for hiking, camping, and enjoying scenic landscapes.

The opening reflects a broader commitment to conservation, public access, and the continued expansion of Texas’ state park system, ensuring future generations can experience the state’s diverse natural environments.
